Finance has always been a game of information asymmetry — whoever holds better data, faster, wins. For decades, that edge belonged to firms with vast quant teams and proprietary terminals. But a new class of technology is democratizing that edge in ways that would have seemed like science fiction a decade ago. Large language models, the engine behind today’s most capable AI systems, are rapidly becoming the most consequential infrastructure in fintech.
The numbers speak for themselves: global investment in AI-powered financial services surpassed $35 billion in 2025, and analysts project the market will nearly double by 2028. But raw capital flows only tell part of the story. The more interesting question is where AI is actually changing the game — and where it still has to prove itself.
Traditional credit scoring is a blunt instrument. A FICO score compresses decades of financial behavior into a three-digit number that often fails thin-file borrowers — recent immigrants, young adults, gig workers — who may be creditworthy but lack the paper trail to prove it. LLMs are enabling a fundamentally different approach: ingesting unstructured data sources, from rental histories to business invoices, and synthesizing a far richer picture of creditworthiness. Early deployments at lending startups have shown meaningful reductions in default rates while approving applicants legacy models would have rejected outright.
Fraud is a moving target. Rule-based systems — flag transactions over $10,000, block cards used in two countries within 24 hours — are trivially gamed by sophisticated actors who study the playbook. AI models trained on billions of transactions can identify behavioral anomalies that no human analyst would notice: a subtle shift in typing cadence during a login, a purchase pattern that mirrors a known mule network, a micro-transaction sequence that precedes account takeover. Unlike static rules, these models update continuously as fraud tactics evolve.
Regulatory compliance is one of finance’s most expensive burdens. Banks collectively spend hundreds of billions annually on compliance operations, much of it on document review, audit trails, and regulatory reporting. LLMs are uniquely suited to this work: they excel at reading dense regulatory text, mapping it to internal policy, flagging gaps, and generating the documentation regulators actually want to see. Several tier-one banks have already deployed LLM-powered compliance assistants that have cut review times dramatically — while improving accuracy over human-only processes.
For generations, sophisticated financial planning was a luxury reserved for the affluent. LLMs are changing that calculus. A well-designed AI wealth assistant can analyze a client’s full financial picture — income volatility, tax exposure, risk tolerance, life goals — and deliver genuinely personalized guidance that previously required a high-net-worth relationship with a human advisor. This isn’t a chatbot telling you to diversify. It’s a system that notices your emergency fund is misallocated given your income seasonality, and explains why, in plain language.
The fintech applications of LLMs are maturing quickly, but meaningful challenges remain. Hallucination — models generating confident but incorrect outputs — is a critical risk in any domain where errors carry real financial or legal consequence. Explainability requirements from regulators demand that AI-driven decisions be auditable, which strains against the black-box nature of large models. And the firms that move fastest will need to invest heavily in data governance, model monitoring, and human oversight.
Still, the direction of travel is unmistakable. The financial institutions that treat AI as a superficial layer — a chatbot on top of legacy architecture — will find themselves outcompeted by those building AI-native operations from the ground up. In a sector where basis points matter and milliseconds win deals, the firms that master LLMs won’t just be more efficient. They’ll be operating in a different category entirely.
